New Cross & Deptford

Student moves around Goldsmiths

Single rooms, shared houses and the summer storage gap — for students at Goldsmiths and anyone else living in a house where only one person is moving.

New Cross empties and refills twice a year, and for about a fortnight each time the whole area is trying to move simultaneously. It is the busiest thing that happens in this part of the borough and it is entirely predictable, which means it can be planned for.

One room, not one house

Most student moves here are a single room coming out of a shared house that stays occupied. That is its own kind of job: a crew working around people who are not moving, protecting a hallway that four other tenancies depend on, and getting the load out without blocking a street that has nowhere to park.

We do not treat it as a scaled-down house removal. It is a different piece of work and it is quoted as one.

Be honest about the volume

The commonest mistake is under-describing what is going. Ten boxes and a bike is a man-and-van job. A full room with a desk, a chair, a mattress and two years of accumulation is not. Send us photographs or do a two-minute video call and we will size the vehicle properly — which is cheaper than sending a second van.

What we will tell you

If you do not need us, we will say so. A single suitcase and a box of books is a job for a taxi, not a removals firm, and pretending otherwise would be taking money for nothing.

Summer storage

The sensible alternative to taking everything home for the summer and bringing it back in September.

  • Collected from your house at the end of term
  • Itemised, so you know exactly what went in
  • Sealed and stored, not stacked in a corner
  • Delivered to a new address in September
Ask about storage

Sharing a load

If you are heading the same way as a housemate and neither of your dates is fixed, a shared load is the cheapest sensible option. Tell us where you are both going.

Questions

Student moves — the usual questions

Can you move one room out of a shared house?

Yes — it is most of what we do around New Cross. The rest of the house carries on living there while we work, so we get in, protect the shared hallway, and get out without turning the place over.

Can my things go into storage over the summer?

Yes. Goods are inventoried, sealed and stored, and delivered back to wherever you are living in September. For most students it costs less hassle than hauling everything home to another city and back.

I have got about ten boxes and a bike.

Then you want a man and van, not a removal crew, and we will say so. Be honest with us about the volume and we will size the vehicle properly rather than selling you something bigger.

When should I book?

For the end of the summer term and the start of the academic year, as far ahead as you possibly can. Those two fortnights are when the entire New Cross student population tries to move at once and the streets simply cannot take it.

Next step

Moving out at the end of term?

Tell us where you are now, where it is going, and whether you need storage in between. Book early for June and September — those two fortnights fill fast.
